Here’s What Actually Converts. ## 1. Understanding Paywall Effectiveness The effectiveness of a paywall is determined by more than just its design; it's influenced by the entire user journey, the timing of its appearance, and the way value is communicated. ### 1.1. The Paywall is Part of a Larger Flow 1. **The decision to pay often happens before the paywall is seen.** Users might decide to subscribe at various points, not just when they encounter the paywall screen. All touchpoints in the user's journey are crucial for influencing their decision to pay. 2. **Paywalls can appear at different stages of the user lifecycle.** Examples include after onboarding, when a premium feature is unlocked, within settings, or as a win-back offer. Personalized paywalls that speak directly to the user's needs are more effective. 3. **A paywall is not just a single screen, but an entire flow.** Apps like Opal sell the outcome (e.g., "getting 8 years of your life back") before presenting the paywall, making it feel less like an interruption. This approach, by highlighting the benefit of saving years of life, increased trial sign-ups from 7% to 17%. 4. **Multi-page paywalls generally outperform single-page paywalls.** This allows information to unfold gradually, giving users time to process the decision. A well-functioning paywall feels like a natural next step in the product experience, not an abrupt halt. 5. **Even a well-designed paywall can fail if it appears at the wrong moment.** One-time offers that disappear if closed can be effective, especially when paired with animation and haptic feedback to grab attention. ### 1.2. Strategies to Reduce Risk and Increase Conversions 1. **Addressing user hesitation is key to reducing risk.** Users may worry about forgetting to cancel or making the wrong decision. Blinkist redesigned their paywall to show a step-by-step timeline, which led to more trial sign-ups and fewer complaints. This also increased push notification opt-ins, as they serve as reminders before the trial ends. 2. **Presentation can significantly impact conversion rates.** Tipstop emphasized the free trial, added a discount badge, and simplified the offer's presentation, which nearly tripled direct conversions. 3. **Removing the traditional paywall can be effective.** Slopes created a "pay ramp" inspired by Apple's redeem free trial approach, where users see a single action: "redeem your free week." This change alone increased trial starts by 25%. 4. **Subtle text and button elements can improve performance.** Adding a "no commitment cancel anytime" subtitle can incrementally boost paywall performance. Experimenting with calls to action beyond a simple "continue" button can be beneficial. A right chevron on the button is often present in winning paywalls and can be included to test its impact. ### 1.3. The Role of Friction and Value Framing 1. **Exit intent offers can capture users considering leaving.** If a user tries to hit cancel, an exit intent sheet can offer alternatives, like a monthly plan if they aren't ready for a yearly commitment. 2. **Longer free trials can achieve goals while preserving trust.** Instead of aggressive last-minute discounts (best reserved for sales events), offering a longer trial can be a safer approach. 3. **Adding friction can sometimes increase conversion rates by filtering users.** Outsider required credit card details for a free trial, which decreased sign-ups by more than half but increased conversion rates fivefold. This extra step filtered out users who were not serious about subscribing. 4. **Framing the offer is as important as the offer itself.** Moonly introduced a free trial only on the annual plan, changing how the offer was presented. 5. **Social proof and value framing are common persuasive techniques.** Real user reviews and star ratings build credibility and authority. Value framing aligns the offer with what users genuinely care about. 6. **Price anchoring and breaking down costs can influence perception.** Tide breaks down its price into smaller weekly amounts. Ahead compares subscription costs to everyday expenses like coffee or therapy. ### 1.4. Pricing, Packaging, and Design Elements 1. **Testing different trial lengths and plans is crucial.** Headspace tested 7, 14, and 30-day free trials, finding that a 14-day trial for the annual plan performed best. A longer trial, even for a more expensive annual plan, made the decision feel less risky. 2. **Pricing structure should align with business goals.** While yearly products often have the highest Lifetime Value (LTV), they may not be the best fit for every business. If offering multiple pricing options, limit them to two (e.g., yearly and monthly) to reduce cognitive load. Additional pricing options should be hidden behind a "view all plans" button. 3. **Table-based paywalls can effectively showcase benefits.** These tables highlight what users are missing out on if they don't subscribe. They are less common in some platforms due to building complexity. 4. **Video paywalls can communicate value quickly.** Showing the app in action with a video can be more effective than static screenshots or bullet points. 5. **Polish, including animations and branding, is increasingly important.** Apps like Focus Town demonstrate a high level of polish with branding, custom designs, and world-building. This attention to detail raises the bar for successful apps, making polish a competitive differentiator. ### 1.5. What to Be Cautious About and Future Trends 1. **AI tools can help reference existing design patterns.** Mobbin MCP provides AI tools access to Mobbin's library, allowing them to reference real-world app designs. This grounds AI output in existing successful designs rather than generating novel, unproven concepts. 2. **Some high-converting tactics may not be suitable for long-term business.** "Spin the wheel" paywalls, while effective for short-term revenue maximization, can feel like tactics used in drop shipping. These predetermined wheels offer a discount, encouraging immediate subscription. However, their increasing prevalence can lead to user skepticism and may not align with a long-term business strategy. 3. **Fake urgency tactics are becoming less effective.** As users become accustomed to these tactics, they are more likely to close paywalls, expecting an offer later. 4. **Apple is enforcing stricter paywall compliance.** In early 2026, Apple began rejecting paywall patterns that used confusing or misleading free trial toggles. 5. **There is no single "best" paywall; experimentation is key.** An example of an "ugly" but high-performing paywall from an AI girlfriend app demonstrates that design isn't the only factor. Radically different designs should be tested to find what truly resonates with users. Testing copy, pricing, and flow is essential until a clear winner emerges. 6. **Focus on retention and LTV for long-term success.** Building something people continue to pay for is harder than getting initial subscriptions. High retention and LTV indicate a good product and contribute to a flourishing ecosystem. The ultimate question should be: "How can I create something worth paying for?" Paste it into Google Docs and you lose code blocks, math, diagrams. There is no fast path from AI output to a document you can send someone. ### The Architecture The rendering engine is Rust (`comrak`) compiled to WASM via `wasm-bindgen`. Markdown goes in, HTML comes out in about 2ms, entirely client-side. Post-processing handles `highlight.js` for syntax coloring, KaTeX for math, and Mermaid for diagrams. The engine is a single WASM binary that runs identically across all targets. Why Rust instead of a JS parser? Because I wanted one engine, many surfaces. Product Hunt **Tagline:** AI output to shareable document in one click **Description:** mdfy.cc captures AI output from ChatGPT, Claude, and Gemini and turns it into a permanent, beautifully rendered URL. Powered by a Rust+WASM engine. Available on web, CLI, VS Code, Chrome, Mac desktop, MCP server, and tmux. No login required. ### Maker Comment I am Hyunsang, the solo founder of mdfy.cc. I built the entire product with Claude as my pair programmer. The problem I kept hitting: I would have a great conversation with an AI, get a well-structured response with code blocks, tables, and diagrams, and then have no good way to share it. Copy-paste into Docs breaks the formatting. Screenshots lose the text. Saving as a file means the recipient needs to know what Markdown is. mdfy.cc fixes this. Paste any Markdown, get a rendered document, click share, and you have a permanent URL anyone can open in a browser. The whole flow takes under 5 seconds. What makes this different from existing Markdown tools: First, it is a cross-AI layer. The Chrome extension captures directly from ChatGPT, Claude, and Gemini. The MCP server lets AI agents publish and read documents programmatically. mdfy.cc sits between AI providers and the people who need to read their output. Second, seven channels from one engine. The rendering core is Rust compiled to WASM. The same binary powers the web app, a CLI tool, a VS Code extension, a Chrome extension, a Mac desktop app, an MCP server, and a tmux integration. One codebase, consistent rendering everywhere. Third, zero friction. No account creation. No login wall. Paste and share. The document gets a short URL like `mdfy.cc/abc123` with an edit token so you can update or delete it later. The rendering handles everything modern Markdown needs: GFM tables, KaTeX math, Mermaid diagrams, syntax highlighting for 190+ languages, dark and light modes, and mobile-responsive layout. Free during beta. I would love to hear what you think. ## 3. Reddit r/programming **Title:** I built a Rust+WASM Markdown engine that powers 7 different clients from one codebase I have been working on mdfy.cc, a Markdown publishing tool that turns AI output into shareable URLs. The interesting part from an engineering perspective is the architecture: a single Rust rendering engine compiled to WASM, shared across seven different surfaces. ### The Engine Built on `comrak`, the same GFM-compliant Markdown parser that GitLab and Reddit use. Compiled to WASM via `wasm-bindgen` with `wasm-pack` targeting the bundler output. The binary is around 600KB. Rendering happens client-side in about 2ms. No server round-trip for the parse-and-render step. ### Why Rust instead of remark/marked/markdown-it? I wanted one source of truth for rendering. JS parsers are fine for a single web app, but the moment you need the same rendering in a CLI, a VS Code extension, a desktop app, and an MCP server, you either maintain N parsers or you compile one to run everywhere. Rust-to-WASM gave me the latter. ### Post-processing Pipeline The WASM engine outputs raw HTML. A TypeScript post-processor then handles: 1. `highlight.js` for code blocks 2. KaTeX for math expressions 3. Mermaid diagram containers 4. copy buttons on code blocks `comrak` uses `github_pre_lang: true`, so code blocks come out as `
` rather than ``. The post-processor regex is tuned to that format.
### One Thing I Learned the Hard Way
`syntect` (Rust syntax highlighter) uses the `onig` C library, which cannot compile to `wasm32-unknown-unknown`. I spent two days trying to make it work before moving syntax highlighting to the client-side JS layer. Similarly, `wasm-opt` does not support bulk memory operations from recent Rust WASM output, so I had to disable it entirely. The Rust-to-WASM toolchain is powerful but the edges are sharp.
### The Seven Clients
Web app (Next.js 15), CLI, VS Code extension, Chrome extension (captures from ChatGPT/Claude/Gemini), Mac desktop (Electron), MCP server (lets AI agents publish/read docs), and tmux integration. All share the same engine.
### Cross-AI Angle
The MCP server is the most interesting piece architecturally. Any AI agent that speaks MCP can create, read, update, or delete documents on mdfy.cc. The Chrome extension captures AI conversations. The URL becomes the interchange format between AI systems.

The problem: every AI outputs Markdown. ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini -- all of them.
But that output is trapped in chat windows. Copy it out and the formatting breaks. There is no fast path from AI response to a document you can share.
mdfy.cc fixes that.

How it works:
1. Paste any Markdown (or capture from AI with the Chrome extension)
2. Rendered instantly -- tables, math, diagrams, code
3. Click Share -- get a URL like `mdfy.cc/abc123`
4. Anyone can view it. No account needed on either end.

**Description:** mdfy.cc captures AI output from ChatGPT, Claude, and Gemini and turns it into a permanent, beautifully rendered URL. Powered by a Rust+WASM engine. Available on web, CLI, VS Code, Chrome, Mac desktop, MCP server, and tmux. No login required.
### Maker Comment
I am Hyunsang, the solo founder of mdfy.cc.
What makes this different from existing Markdown tools:
First, it is a cross-AI layer.
## 3. Reddit r/programming
**Title:** I built a Rust+WASM Markdown engine that powers 7 different clients from one codebase
I have been working on mdfy.cc, a Markdown publishing tool that turns AI output into shareable URLs. The interesting part from an engineering perspective is the architecture: a single Rust rendering engine compiled to WASM, shared across seven different surfaces.
### The Engine
Built on `comrak`, the same GFM-compliant Markdown parser that GitLab and Reddit use.
### Post-processing Pipeline
The WASM engine outputs raw HTML. A TypeScript post-processor then handles:
1. `highlight.js` for code blocks
2. KaTeX for math expressions
3. Mermaid diagram containers
4. copy buttons on code blocks
`comrak` uses `github_pre_lang: true`, so code blocks come out as `` rather than ``.

I built mdfy.cc -- it turns AI output into shareable documents.
Paste Markdown. Get a permanent URL. No login.
Powered by a Rust engine compiled to WASM. Renders in 2ms, entirely in your browser.
Here is how it works and why I built it:

The problem: every AI outputs Markdown. ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini -- all of them.
But that output is trapped in chat windows. Copy it out and the formatting breaks. There is no fast path from AI response to a document you can share.
mdfy.cc fixes that.

How it works:
1. Paste any Markdown (or capture from AI with the Chrome extension)
2. Rendered instantly -- tables, math, diagrams, code
3. Click Share -- get a URL like `mdfy.cc/abc123`
4. Anyone can view it. No account needed on either end.

The engine is Rust (`comrak`) compiled to WASM. One binary, seven surfaces:
- Web app
- CLI
- VS Code extension
- Chrome extension
- Mac desktop app
- MCP server
- tmux integration
Same rendering everywhere. No parser divergence.
### Tweet 5
The MCP server is the part I am most excited about.
