# Picking the background colour by hand

The GIF background remover on AnimateImage makes one background colour transparent in every frame. By default it estimates that colour from the four corners of the first frame. Most of the time that guess is right. When it is not, you can click on the image to pick the colour yourself.

When to pick by hand:

- **A corner is covered** by part of the subject, such as a hand or a caption.
- **The corners have a vignette** or a darker edge than the rest of the background.
- **You want to remove an inner colour,** not the outer frame.

After picking, adjust the tolerance (0 to 255, default 30) until the edges look clean. GIF transparency is on or off per pixel, so edges stay hard; this suits logos, stickers and plain-screen clips more than busy photos.

Limits are up to 20 MiB, 120 frames and 1600 px per side. Learn to [choose the colour to remove](https://animateimage.org/gif-background-remover), or try the other free tools on [AnimateImage](https://animateimage.org/).

AnimateImage is an independent image animation site; the video models it offers are made by third parties not affiliated with it.

## Summary
The AnimateImage GIF background remover automatically selects a transparent color from the corners of the first frame, but users can manually pick a different color if the default choice is inaccurate. Users can further refine the result by adjusting the tolerance setting to clean up the edges of the image.

## Themes

- Manual color selection

## Key takeaways
- AnimateImage allows users to manually select a background color if the automated corner-based detection is inaccurate.
- Users can adjust the tolerance setting from 0 to 255 to refine the transparency edges, with a default value of 30.
- The tool is limited to files up to 20 MiB, 120 frames, and 1600 pixels per side.
- Manual color selection is recommended when corners contain vignettes or when the user intends to remove an internal color.

## Insights
- GIF transparency is binary per pixel, which makes it unsuitable for soft edges or complex photographic backgrounds.
- The default background detection relies on corner sampling, which fails if the subject overlaps the frame edges.

## Open questions / gaps
- What specific algorithm or method does the tool use to calculate the tolerance threshold for pixel transparency?
