# Grid or DCA? How two common crypto trading bot styles work

Many exchanges now offer simple automation. This piece explains two widely used styles, dollar-cost averaging (DCA) and grid trading, in plain terms, using BYDFi's Spot DCA, Spot Grid and Futures Grid as examples. It is a how-it-works guide, not advice on what to buy.

DCA buys a fixed plan of tokens at regular intervals, such as daily, weekly or monthly, regardless of price. On BYDFi, a Spot DCA plan can hold several tokens with custom or equal allocation, and an optional buy price range limits purchases to a chosen band.

A grid bot places buy and sell orders at set steps inside a price range you choose. Spot Grid works on spot pairs without leverage. Futures Grid runs long, short or neutral grids on USDT-M contracts, so it also carries futures risk, including liquidation.

DCA is time-based; grids are price-range-based. Points to check before using either: the range or schedule you set, trading fees on each order, what happens if price leaves the range, and whether leverage is involved. A worked example with made-up numbers can help readers see how each style behaves in a rising, falling or sideways market, as long as it is clearly labelled as illustrative.

Both are under Trading Bots at [https://www.bydfi.com/](https://www.bydfi.com/) and in the BYDFi App. Normal trading fees apply to the orders a bot places; check the current fee page before you start.

## Summary
Dollar-cost averaging automates token purchases at regular time intervals, while grid trading executes buy and sell orders within a specific price range. Both strategies function as automated tools for managing trades, though they differ in their reliance on time versus price movement.

## Themes
- crypto trading automation
- DCA vs grid trading
- BYDFi bot functionality

## Key takeaways
- DCA involves purchasing fixed amounts of tokens at regular intervals regardless of price.
- Spot Grid bots execute buy and sell orders within a user defined price range without leverage.
- Futures Grid bots operate on USDT-M contracts and support long, short, or neutral positions.
- BYDFi Spot DCA plans allow for multi-token portfolios with either equal or custom allocations.
- Trading bot performance is influenced by market conditions including rising, falling, or sideways trends.

## Insights
- DCA strategies are defined by time intervals while grid bots are defined by price ranges.
- Futures Grid bots introduce liquidation risks that are absent in Spot Grid or Spot DCA strategies.
- Trading bots do not bypass standard exchange fee structures and users should verify costs before deployment.

## Open questions / gaps
- How does the bot specifically handle assets when the market price moves outside of the pre-set grid range?
